Portals
Portals is an evening length multimedia musical exploration of the human longing for connection in the digital age. With Philip Glass’ Partita for Solo Violin, written for Fain as the centerpiece of the evening, Fain reimagines the performance experience, taking the audience on a journey through failures and triumphs of new portals of relationships, our electronic present and future.
The production interweaves films by Kate Hackett (including piano performances by Nicholas Britell), dance films choreographed and directed by Benjamin Millepied, and the words of Leonard Cohen spoken by Performance Today host Fred Child, and features the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composers Aaron Jay Kernis, William Bolcom, and Kevin Puts, along with works by Nico Muhly and Lev Zhurbin.
Featured in Vogue, and called “a smart mix of sound and vision for the Facebook generation, who love Bjork and Beethoven with equal ardor” by Vanity Fair, Portals premiered to sold-out audiences in New York, Los Angeles, and at its Midwestern premiere at Omaha’s KANEKO, and has been seen at Australia’s Melbourne Festival, Le Lieu Unique in France, and continues to travel world-wide.
